Flea market finds... good pickens!

Here is this weird vinyl baby (I found 2 of them) called a Plump Pee. Too strange not to buy. Dated from the 60's. and Marx's sparking hot rod (either 50's or 60's) not my era of toys, but they make good thing for trades. I do like them too.

This is my spot for the cars I find at the flea markets and for current ones I picked up. I found some real good deals out there this year because I only really looked for cars at the fleas this year and I kept it within the budget. Bought one or two of the new hotwheels at target now and then too. The new cars are getting to be fun again. Wild new designs.

What the heck are these creeps? Found them at the flea. 50 cents each. Ant guy and eyeball guy. Disgusting and wonderful.

This was an ebay from awhile back. When I saw this somewhere I tracked this down online. It's a matchbox truck with setter dogs in the back (we had an english setter named daisy) this was hard to find complete and in my price range, but I managed to get this for under 10 bucks. My waiting paid off.

Redlines! Found this Rocket bye baby in yellow, Formula 5000 1976 super chromes version and this magenta Bugeye from my regular redline guy. Got a great deal from him as usual. Really cool find. Love these!

I got this bank on ebay after seeing it long ago and not buying it at memory lanes in torrance. Good thing to cause I got it for real cheap!

2011 is knocking. We are still at war in Iraq and Afghanistan. What's it going to be like when those soldiers come home? Higher crime? Crippled homeless vets? Let's not put the hose before the cart. They need to get home first. I try not think about it. I don't think about the economy recovering soon either. All my art friends have lowered their already low prices and people now expect art for around 20 bucks. I guess you got to learn how to almost give it away. If you can make a buck out there you have to stretch it till the eagle grins. That seems to be the mindset of most people. This year I am going to do the same as last year and paint my hiney off. What else can I do? All the jobs out there are all taken by college interns who work cheap or free. As I watched True Grit this week I wondered when we are going to get back to the wild untamed times of the wild west or something like Mad Max. those are just movies and even still Try not to think about that stuff.

We all get help where we can these days. It's so easy to get depressed too. I try to be optimistic, but everyones bummed out most times. One good thing is I don't drive back and fourth to work on the 405 anymore. That time probably took years off my life. I'm still in fairly good shape health wise, but I do need to loose lots of weight. Will see how I do on that this year, but I'm ready for it. I have a wife who loves me almost unconditionally and two very eager to please dogs. We still have our house and can pay the bills. Those are the things try to focus on. I get to paint what I want everyday too. Maybe the best thing of all. It's a dream come true and I'm working hard as I can to keep it going.

This year for christmas I tried to do some things we have been meaning to take care of but never got to. Like getting the cable tv in the bedroom too, I got a router for Sharon's laptop so she can go on the net even if I'm on it already and I got a little commission job to pay for a recliner for Sharon for when she gets home from work. This year it's about finding the best way to help out those close to you and let them know you care. Well, for me that's how I'm doing it this year. If you have not done something for the people you love this year it's never too late. Remember this too... Hugs are free and always make people feel good. My Off! box set came in the mail this week so happy xmas to me. It kicks you in the gut. The art in the book and cover is the most intense and disturbing since jealous again. Very creepy, powerful and good. I love this video too. I have been making my own songs lately, but not as good as this. You can feel the spontaneous emotions loud and clear.

Hi De Ho leaves historic location in Santa Monica, CA

My favorite spot to stop for years was HiDeHo comics in Santa Monica. I often drove there on weekends or just to go for a drive. The thing about it is it had the best location and atmosphere. I'm sure they still have good deals in their new spot, but that old spot was even the place of that famous photo of all the zap artist together taken in the parking lot. I worked in mailbu for years, and would stop there for lunch and wednesday nights for new comic days. These photos are what I could find on the old location. Now a days I go to Geoffery's in Hawthorne, sometimes Comic Cult in torrance and I might swing in to Amazing Comic in Long Beach now and then. I guess I need to see the new location of Hi De Ho too...

Once possible KISS/Elder movie: What may have been...

So me being the big KISS fanatic that I am I love all their output. Even the most mystery wrapped release they ever made,"Music from the Elder". Every KISS fan that bought this asked themselves, "what were they thinking, and what does this opera lp mean?" Well, as I sometimes buy used dvd's on amazon I decided to have a Ralph Bakshi animation week, so I got a few of his titles I ether forgot about or never saw. Ralph made the Lord of the Rings film and the great cult movie Heavy Metal which was a series of stories based on features from Heavy Metal magazine. It also featured a hit soundtrack with classic rock acts. When KISS made Music from the Elder they claimed they had a movie idea to go with it. also they had Lou Reed co write some songs for it. So I rent this movie by Bakshi called "Rock and Rule" which may be a glimpse of what they were shooting for. Gene Simmons said they were thinking of a concept like Dungeons and Dragons with a boy hero. A coming of age story animated feature. Rock and rule has music by debbi harry, cheap trick, Iggy and, you guessed it, Lou Reed.... it's a love wins in the end good vs. evil story, but I'm guessing this may have once been the Elder movie planned then scrapped into Rock and Rule. KISS must have wanted to cash in on the midnight movie craze in the early 80's since that's were cool lived at that time. Song remains the same by led Zep, The Sargent Pepper Movie, Heavy Metal, Pink Floyd the Wall, and then to bring in the new music Dance Craze and The Decline of Western Civiliztaion. All of which late night movies then cable classics. I have to guess KISS's timing was off and they must have missed the window for this kind of movie to work. So pick this up if you get the chance. The music is all good and the animation like this will never be made this way again ( I love the 80's animation look of all of Bakshi's "rotoscoped" movies...). If you like this and want another classic Rock and Roll movie from this time check out "Roadie" with Meatloaf! (also fetauing Cheap Trick music). Until next time, the balcony is closed...

My sister recently was talking about Tony Clifton which lead me to post this Andy Kaufman classic here. I have this on vhs tape given to me by a former boss along with a plaque that said best in show number one black and white bitch (I used to be an inker there... the plaque was obviously from a dog show) Well, I love going out to breakfast, and this is really good. Classie Freddy Blassie also sang the great tune Pencil Neck Geek as well as being known as a pro wrestler. Enjoy this one!

Long Beach Comic Con Saturday Afternoon Oct,30, 2010

Round two for the con. Had a meeting with Dave from Slum Circus (good guy that dave). Brought some subway foot longs to avoid paying 6 bucks for a sweaty hot dog. Today went smooth because I scoped out what I wanted to do on friday. The loot today? I tried to keep the spending down, but on the way out I got in a haggle war with a comic vendor on a minty Silver Surfer Number 2 (Yeah I know it's not "Number 1" but that goes for the high dollars) I'm not one to normally buy rare comics, but he knocked 25 bucks off his asking price. I don't know if I got a great deal (I need to price it out) but a few folks at the booth said "you sold that book for how much?" so, I think it was a good buy. Bought a boot dvd of "The Decline" and a few budget friendly old Spectacular Spiderman comics from the days of my youth. Check out the Superfriends I got photos of. Happy Halloween, be safe people!

The weather was perfect for the flea market. We were budgeting so I decided to take a few photos so not to spend too much.
Besides we left our pups inside until we got back. When we got home we had a crock pot full of 14 bean soup and fresh bread from Pollyanne's bakery. It was a great day. We had a good time....

I bought this bottle opener from these guys (it was like the one used on Pink Floyd's Relics lp) I did not notice when I was there that they had racist stuff (had I known I would have passed on buying from them). Some others had questionable stuff too. (Nazi stuff) I don't like to buy from these dealers.

and here's the loot... I try not to buy fischer price toys, but this was so cute I made an exception (and the price was right...) The Ice T hotwheel is a Tom Danels fave of mine.... I haggeled a bit on it, and got a good deal. Richard Scarey books have great illustrations in them and I got this one for only 3 bucks... and the "Relics" bottle opener like the one on the Pink Floyd cover.
After the bean soup, I took a good little snooze. Tonight the annual "Longest yard sale" TV show is on at 8. Time to go toss the ball for the dogs... until next post, Aloha!

A visit from Cousin Lori, Her husband Dennis, and son DJ

My cousin Lori came by for a quick hello, and I finally met their son DJ who is seven. DJ loves art, and great Grandma Ardis gave him some pastels while they were in town. He is quite a charming guy with good manners. Too bad we didn't have more time to draw... Nice to see Lori and Dennis too. Lori and I were good friends growing up. Sometimes we even wore matching outfits! Good to see them....

Raining today, me and the pups inside. I had "Chicken Vindaloo" from TJ's today (made famous by the Ramones song "Somthin to do" here's the lyrics: (Hanging out of Second Avenue Eating chicken vindaloo I just want to be with you I just want to have something to do Tonight, tonight, tonight,tonight,tonight,tonight Well allright. Tonight, tonight, tonight,tonight,tonight,tonight Wait-Now Wait-Now Hanging out all by myself Cause I don't want to be with anybody else I just want to be with you I just want to have something to do Tonight ) Joey Ramone was the coolest there ever was. I went to SF on vacation (first one I ever took alone...) I was walking down haight street in the a.m (like 6am!). and I see Joey and an entourage walking down the street. I followed them for a bit and finally waved and he waved back, he was having fun window shopping. Years later we were drinking beer in the parking lot of the warner grand in san pedro (Ramones/fIREHOSE and bad religion were playing that night) Joey hung out with us and talked before the show. He had total love for his fans, I miss the Ramones! Well, getting back to the Chicken Vindaloo, It's a curry chicken with cinnamon, cloves, ginger and garlic. I used to love smoking clove cigs, and the flavor had clove hints. Some folks don't care for curry... but I can picture the Ramones in NY on a cold day, eating this chicken with steam coming off it. Hot and spicy to keep warm. I love this stuff...

Rock and Roll art show was a great success!

Man, do I love this town! Thank you town of San Pedro and all the great kids here... The Rock and Roll art show went down with everyone in town pitching in and helping out and with no violence what so ever. We posted a few rules and they were respected, so it looks good for having more all ages shows at the venue! I got to thank my MVP once again, it goes to Craig Ibarra who showed me how to make this show work, and did huge amounts of work for this show Thank You Crankie! All the artist pitched in before and after the show... Thank You Artists! Victor helped me lug my crud around, thanks Victor! Thanks Dirk, Jenny, Mike Brady, big big thanks to Calimucho! for their help and live screenprinting. Kid Kevin made the all stars with all his help (literally put his back into it!) Thank You Kevin! Thank you Maya from the Cultural Center for allowing us to have the show. Thanks END FWY for the p.a. and more! Let's hear it for Bombon, Hippy Riot!, and Toys that Kill. I got chills watching these bands. They are so good! Bombon is so much fun. They were the first band I wanted for this show. I saw Hippy Riot! at tri arts before this show and they are great! Kind of hardcore with a rocka hillbilly beat, very cool band. I did not think I could get Toys that Kill, but my MVP got them. They are as good as any great band I have ever seen, and always get my ass shaking. Everyone did this show FREE! and I thank you all for that too.

Almost forgot! Thanks to my beautiful wife Sharon for getting me ready for this show. Thanks to my dogs Chet and Coco who missed me as I was working on this show the last few days. When the show was done they gave me lots of kisses when I got home. Thanks to those who bought my shirts too! We had Subway after the show with lots of cucumber and peppers.

I'm going to spend most of the day posting all the band footage and artwork on the rock and roll art show blog page. I really do love this town... everyone had kind words and gave praise for the show... We all did this show for fun, it was fun for me and I hope you all liked it too.... My name is Scott Aicher, but I have been given many nicknames (Skoots, Skeets, Space Ghost, Scootch, Doochkavie....I could keep going, but I digress) I have been drawing and painting my whole life. Mostly I learned from my mother, Pat Zaleski and grandmother Ardis Underwood. They showed me the techniques to get started, my uncle Don Underwood stimulated my creativity by turning me on to underground artists like Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, Rick Griffin, Zap Magazine, Weirdo Magazine (I got these taken away at school a few times, I always had a copy in my backpack.) I grew up in Redondo Beach, CA. when skateboarding was getting it second wind of popuality. On the playground, we traded "Odd Rod" and Super Baseball/Football Freak cards, Mad Magazines, Redline Hot Wheels, Zowies, Wacky Packages Gum Cards, Kiss Cards, and today I collect all these things, and they are they catalyst for my creative ideas.

Moving to San Pedro in my early 20's I made flyers for local bands and worked 2 jobs. One at a local print shop doing graphic design, darkroom work and delivery. and on weekends at Peanut Records in Lomita, where I met bands and found lots of dates. One night my friends in the band Generator were playing a show with Pennywise at big john's house in gardena. John form generator insisted that I go, he told me, "I will come over there and drag you there" if I didn't get off my couch. When I got there I saw a red headed girl across the crowd, and went to get her a beer, but I did not know how I was going to talk to her. When I got back from the keg, she was over by the porta pottie talking to my friend from high school, Stephanie. We stared talking about how nirvana was going to be on SNL that night for the first time, so we went to my apartment to watch it. Sharon is still my wife today. She sees to it that all my art is the best it can be, and tells me to fix it when it needs work. We have a house in San Pedro, and a dog named Daisy whom we love like a baby.

I have had quite a few art shows locally and contribute to the fanzine "the Rise and the Fall" that is distributed throughout Los Angeles, and reaches people as far as Washington D.C. I do reviews and every issue I do a comic too. The RATF has a my space page, so check it out! I also show at Gasoline Gallery now and then in El Segundo, they specialize in all aspects of kustom kulture, so check them out too on my space.

I worked for many years designing for clothing lines in action sports and entertainment companies before starting Planet 67 to have more creative control, so I have plenty of experience in all aspects of graphic design and production art. Paul Conrad passes away...

When I was 12 or so around 1979 my mom asked if I wanted to take a cartooning class at the Palos Verdes art center that summer "IF" we can get you in... Why the if? Because it was a political cartooning class taught by Paul Conrad of the L.A. Times. Coming from a big family of democrat artists on my mom's side my whole family was encouraging me to take the class. Conrad himself did not want me in the class as I was only 12, and he thought I would not understand the politics he talked one on one with me about if I was serious about cartooning. It was the first class that really challenged me, and I realized that cartoons had tremendous power to bring change, challenge the establishment, and give humor to harsh times. When the class was over we got to pick a conrad poster to be signed. I picked "a wave of patriotism is sweeping the country" which had a surfer on a big wave that read "california draft" this was a big concern of mine that I did not want to fight in any war in the future. Conrad told me, "I hope you never have to experience one in your lifetime..." I went on to be the political cartoonist for my school newspaper in high school. This week I am getting my first comic book published and have more planned. So thanks Paul, and so long for now....

Kiss Amry duties today... Mission Accomplished!

Checked KISS on line today and saw the new big gulp cups were in so early this morning I headed over to the 7-11 on 25th in Pedro. When I got there I saw the display, but no cups( just wrestler cups, wwf..)I got tense as I asked, "Do you have KISS slurpee cups? The lady then went in the back and brought out the bounty of plastic fun. I bought 2 of each because I know Gene needs more of my cash, and because it's the horder thing to do. (Really, one set for drinking and one set for putting away with the fine collectibles... But I may use them as paint cups later too.) I filled up one of the catman cups with diet coke and paid the man for the treasure. I did my part in the KISS army today. KISS now joins my other big gulp cups like elvira glow in the dark from weinscnitzel, Ateam from del taco, Star wars ep3 slurpee cups, and the fact that these cups will far out live me. Everyone has some bad habit they love, mine remains throwing cash at Gene Simmons and anything KISS puts out. Oh thank heaven for 7-11 and the long awaited KISS cups!

Slum Circus Show a success!

My friend Dave put on a great artist's alley show in Inglewood on saturday Aug. 28th and I had a booth there. I had fun and it was great meeting all these really cool artists and the weather had finally cooled down making it just perfect for the event. Around late afternoon the sky lights let the sunshine in and left an ominous glow in the room. I traded with Donna Letterese a shirt for one of her prints for Sharon (She's www.drawdvl.com). I talked about a collaboration on the next Group Poop with Alex (He got 2 shirts and some prints too...) I bought the awesome Henry and Glenn Forever (that's at www.iglootornado.com)Dave was a great host and all the folks there were very passionate about art and comics. We all got swag bags with cds, Find magazines, an event book and more... not to mention all the cool indie comics there. Dave plans to do a few more shows, and I will be in them, so I'll keep you posted right here. Here's my work in the new issue of Find magazine. It was a fun show. I watched all the graffiti going on, live painting and Rick Reitveld getting his truck pin stripped. I talked to Rick for a little while. He's a very humble nice guy, and his friend Pat was cool too. I ran into Steve Carranza my former boss (boss? well, art director...) He had his glossy art surfboards up and some new work too. Nice to see his and his family. I hung out for quite a while. Geoff and Nate made me feel right at home. Really nice guys who really love the art and what they are doing. I suggest looking into their fine magazine. The next day our neighbors brought over fresh homemade oatmeal choc. chip cookies. Still warm! Later that night we had some of Sharon's mom's cinnamon raisin bread... what a weekend! I would have liked to have taken some photos of the show, but I was spent, so was my camera. At last, I have found the elusive "Crying Dog" bank...

I don't go on ebay anymore. No money for things like that, but yesterday I searched for the heck of it, for this dog bank I've wanted since the 70's and found it for cheap! I had just been paid from a quick art job, so I decided to get it. Here's the story on why I would want this pitiful pooch: In the 70's I had a friend Danny Alverez who lived down the block with his big family. They had few things being a big family, but each kid had some kind of toy of their own. The old brother built disney haunted mansion models, danny had a speed racer helmet (or was it a nasa helmet?) and a crank up evel kennevil, another brother had rock em sockem robots and his sister who was always sad, had this bank. I asked her why she was sad and she tried to give me this bank. I obviously never forgot the face of this dog. It scarred me because I thought it look like male genitaillia. (Creepy...) It still is so creepy to me, I had to have it. I also remember they had some books like 2001 a space oddessey, watching lidsville, speed racer and the vampire guy that hosted the cartoon show we watched that showed banana splits etc... well you can't live in the past, but this will be a nice visit and a reminder of the old neighborhood

I went to the laguna fish show awhile back and I found this video of me getting my book signed by Jeremy. That's me with the big striped shirt and grolsh beer in hand (I was holding for him while he signed, I don't drink that often, and when I do, It's usually at home where I don't have to drive. My beverage of choice is usually diet soda or ginger ale). Well, watch the clip. If you don't know already, Jeremy is a skater and artist from S.F. who has had great success in the art and skate world. If I were more consistant with small detail, my work would look very much like his, but sometimes I get sloppy (or loose). I do admire his work....

I was a big Plimsouls fan way back. We used to request their songs on kroq because they would actually play them now and then. I doubt many remember the 'souls (As we called them...) or went to Case shows like I did in the 80's and 90's. (I used to take dates to case shows just so they could hear "walk in the woods" and think I was a romantic type of guy (great sad love song...)
Well... recently I was going to check out his show at the folk music center last june but I had no funds so I looked him up on you tube etc... and found that he was sick for a bit, and now o.k. an has a new cd called wig. This post is just to say I'm glad he's still around and making music. One of the best L.A. musicians I can think of, and a great crack in his vocal delivery that I have always loved. Get all the Plimsouls and Nerves stuff, then get "Peter Case" and Bumblebee too (those are my faves) Check out these videos too...">\">

Dirt bike kid 1977

I had a red, white and blue room at the time due to the bi-centennial and getting to chose my room color. Here I am with my new Honda xr75. What a spoiled kid I was. Dirt bike riding was my whole world then, and Boogie Boarding, and Legos. This was taken at our old house 1214 Helberta Ave, Redono Beach, CA. Let the good times roll! (Note: I was wearing dad's helmet in this photo (he had a red Bultaco 250, then a yellow Macio 500) My helmet I would get later was a red bell with a blue scott goggles face gaurd. Oakley one grips and FMF added parts souped up this bike.)

Thank you Gabe and Amanda for this shy adorable girl. She loves the backyard and is very tolerant of Chet the ball of energy. She is very mellow and sweet, and a wardrobe to die for. Scott had a small bed for Chet that he did not like, but Coco curled up in it and took a nap. The 4th is rough (or ruff...) on dogs and Sharon and I will each watch them both as the loud noise scares them both. We will post photo as soon as we can,(Sharon left the camera at her work) and look forward to seeing Coco's name added to the Chet blog heading soon too. Chet and I said Hi to Dirk at Guitar Safari too, then we went to Fantastic Cafe for a Grilled Chicken Sandwich and a Salad Burrito. What a day!

I had the kind of day that everything just worked out. I talked to some of my uncle's back door man fanzine friends and was offered to curate a big art show gig in mid september at the croatian cultural center on 7th and pacific here in Pedro. I got good response from friends, bands and artists and it looks like it's going to happen. Then my close friend who moved away was in town for a few minutes and we had a great talk in the Warner Grand theater here in town. We talked about our families and you know how it is getting older it gets hard seeing people pass away or get sick. Just to see my friend for the few minutes was such a great moment and to be at the Warner as the setting was amazing. I'm so grateful for my friends, and this friend and I go back as far as 1978 and that day I was listening to some girls by the stones which came out that year too. (still a great stones lp, it was a favorite of my uncle's too. One of the best and most expensive to make record covers too..) This 4th of July remember to tell your friends you love them and give them hugs. Life is so fragile you never know, so be sure and say it now. Be careful and have a safe 4th! (the picture of the painting is of my late uncle Don Underwood he and my aunt Liz used to throw big family parties every 4th of July. We would play records all day(rock, punk, blues, doo wop, calypso...), make home made ice cream, BBQ, play croquet,he had a gum ball machine we would dig toys out of and he would have us put them back later. Sometimes I read through his underground comics too. My other uncles Bob and Bill would talk with Don about favorite 3 Stooges and Marx Bros. shows and the Lakers R.I.P.)

I had the chance to go to Larry's garage for an open hose a few times. and once I even tagged along on an interview to Larry's actual home! He is a very humble guy and his wife brought us cookies while we chatted. He showed us old drawings and stacks of photos... what sets him apart from other designers is when you go to buy hotwheels and one car might make you go "wow, look at this one..." It's usually a larry car. Now retired he has his own Larry's Garage line of some of his last work and old classics for mattel. One of his finishing touches is the real rider tire, it has rubber and tread like the real thing. Enjoy this clip!">

My Inspirations: Roger Dean

Obviously Avitar borrowed from the art of Roger Dean. Anytime I see his art it takes me back to the 80's smoking pot and looking at lp covers. (don't smoke pot kids, be smart) His art defines the 70's and 80's all on it's own. He was featured in Heavy Metal magazine a lot which is an adult cartoon magazine popular then (and still around). Back then we just called his art "Trippy". When I worked in the surf wear industry we had dean books in our library, and recently I found some dean books for cheap on amazon. Enjoy these trips!

I saw the Dead Boys, Weidos, Redd kross, All, Stiff little Fingers, Naked Raygun, Replacements, Wire and many more great bands there. Beautiful deco theather. The redd kross show was halloween that year and they had a costume party and played with the famous neurotica backdrop. I sat in the balcony (next to the guy who shot this video footage I guess...) I think they played 2 nights and I went to both shows. Same with the mats I saw them there 2 nights too. SLF played 2 shows back to back and I stayed for both.">

In the adult world there is little room for really letting go. Most people as adult give up things like "Lets start a band" or let's make mud pies or whatever the spontaneous things we did. This is Jeff's leftover creative drain off, because if you never stopped being creative sometimes you make art like this in moments of simple release. Is this a good lp? Do you own Metal machine Music? Is that good too? If you are experienced like jimi was you may understand where this record takes you. I would compare this the the Butthole's Hairway lp but without the brain melt. I like the video for the shake it sister song (I'm going to let you find it yourself on you tube) It has jeff live at at the jonas bros. concert at at magic mountain riding coasters (remember the magic pagoda with the strobe room where the kids would smoke pot?) I bought a rubber lobster there in the 70's. Even though this is noisy I could see this getting played at a hip art opening somewhere. This may wind up as a rare lp one day (it may be sold out already only 500 made) If you can't get enough of the Beatles number 9, this may be the lp you have been waiting for. Hey, isn't the cover kind of like Ciccone Youth's cover somehow? I've got blisters on me fingers....

I hear he is going to be on his show bald from now on. Paul Stanley has been seen with his short hair too. So they wear wigs on stage... are you surprised after all this time? Me neither. He looks good bald. That episode of his show when he doesn't want to go in the water during a military training course (can't wet the toupe) made me nervous. The last live kiss footage looked like Paul's bad hips were hurting him big time... I do hope they make one more record though before they pack it in (Maybe they wont?) Man time flies...

Rhino Revival, Watt Testifies!

I got a ride from Rawl and Paloma over to the gig. Saw Vinnie there and Kid Kevin and lots of pedro folks. It was a benefit for the crysalis foundation so they had it set up as a temporary Rhino store. My uncle Don Underwood and I used to go to rhino for the parking lot sales where you could buy records by the pound (I think it was 3 pounds for 25 cents or something like that?) I remeber if they had rare merch they never priced it at a collector price, so if a record was used, you paid the used record price. This day was like the old days. Most of the things I bought wre under a buck! I got a big book on country singers that i am going to paint from (good reference pics of carl perkins, sam phillips, even E himself, Dolly too!) a huge book for 15 bucks. I bought a Ray Stevens cd(90 cents), a Courtney Love america's sweetheart (90 cents), bbking early days cd(2bucks), Black sabbath technical ecstasy cd(2bucks), and a library book called how to be a folk singer(90 cents), and a beatnik b movie dvd(2bucks). So if they keep it going, get over there and help out with a donation or simply buy some crud (like a ray stevens cd they had lots of them and easy e cassettes for 45 cents (a big box of them, this is what most of the Pedro dudes bought). I going to post the best videos from the day here. I only got 5 videos because i felt silly holding my camera up and not dancing foolishly, but at least I can say I shot the footage myself. One day I'm going to get a camera with good audio for these things. Thanks for the ride you guys, I had fun. I miss Rhino Records in westwood. My uncle's spirit was with me that day. Probably Steve from peanut records' too. and don't forget D. BOON! I talked to Tom Watson after the show and he said they are going to start playing a different set soon, I told him I like the set they play now (espech the wire tunes!) they thew in some new minutemen stuff too. a killer "funhouse" (too bad I didn't get it on video). I got some of the Gears show here too, who ripped it up! enjoy the videos!

So I was out in the sun (overcast sun that is...) at the Screamin show and today at the local car wash it caught up to me and blam, I'm sick! The show was fun but I had stuff to do today and had to re-sched some things. The new rank and file mag is out now at Gasoline Gallery too... with a big feature on this guy Aicher and that Williams cat, Damian, Pizz... It's so legit, it must be a hit! I have been getting some old books that were in the libraries of some of the places I worked. You can really score on old used books on ebay and amazon, but read the description carefully... sometimes you can get really ruined books if your not careful. I picked up these two Olivia books. Although dated 1980's they are great for technique studies for pin up art. I also got the warners book for 7 bucks. This book goes for hundreds at times. My copy was in good shape too. Picked up a Mechagodzilla at cvs in the toy isle when shopping for Diet coke and PBR. Went to memory lanes mall in torrance (I go there when I get the blues sometimes) I found this vintage spidey car shown here in the box, but mine was un-boxed (but cheap! which is the best part) At this month's "little flea" in old torrance I found the spiderman van for a buck. Just because you are broke does not mean you can't still have some fun. The rest of my budget money went to canvas and supplies. I working on making my pin up chicks look better, so now with this good reference, it's improving. Party on people...

The loose gain loose again for one thing and I don't like to talk about weight, let alone blog about it... so, this is where I will bitch and moan still, but I will only tell you weight loss now and then. I am heavily influenced by Art Clokey. Gumby was the most surreal fun a kid could have in the morning. I learned how to get to my imagination and let go of reality for a while when it was on. MAYBE NOW.... maybe they will issue a box set of gumby with the original music that added so much to his animations. HOW LONG will it take to realize his genius? There is a great documentary on his life called Gumby Dharma which is truly amazing and sad too. If you have not seen it I recommend it highly.

She was loved by all that knew her. She protected us at all times. She gave love to all that knew her. She was very independent, and loved butterflies and loved to point birds. She was pretty and she was very proud of it. Daisy, Sharon and I were a unit of 3. She is holding our place in the next world. We miss you Daisy.

I got sick the last two weeks. Some kind of cold, not the Swine, although my eating was out of control this last week. I fought the bad stuff off, but I caved this week with the worst of all sins... the Glazed Donut, two of them, then an apple fritter... you heard me! I got it back in check today with a turkey burger for lunch and chicken soup for dinner. I will live to fight another day...

My father in law restored the red stool that once belonged to my great grandmother. It was crusty with rust. My mom gave it to me partly steel wooled (she got some rust off). George finished it. As you can see... it looks good next to our 1930's stove we got from our new neighbors. My mom also got a new cedar bed for Daisy (now a 3 legger) to cuddle up on.

Weight Watchers Week 7 (I think...)

O.k. so I'm down another 2 pounds... Stress is making it harder to track points, but I'm still at it. I have been cranking out the art work lately for upcoming shows. Long painting sessions... This week I'm going to have to know when to let up on it, and get out on some walks. Our dog Daisy has some medical issues at the moment, but we should know soon if she's going to get through it. Holidays are here again. Bring on the bird! Put out the potatoes! Give me the gravy! Slide me some stuffing! I've been good!

So, the website will have lots more stuff for sale soon, and lots of new art will be on the site too! Look forward to seeing new prints, shirts, hats, buttons, original paintings, etc... I'm taking down the halloween stuff soon, so get it soon if you want it, or wait till next year.

Weight Watchers Week 5

Lots of stress this week made for no weight loss. Our dog Daisy had a leg removed due to cancer, and we found out Sharon's dad has a small melonoma spot to be removed too (he just recently got rid of another case of cancer). So, this week was tough, but I did not gain anything. This next week I intend to get more walks in. I went to the meeting this week too (last week I just weighed in) I'm going to plan out a few meals today, and try and make it more fun. Cancer sucks!

So, today I thought I really blew it this week. Even though you get extra points, I try not to use them, but this week I felt like I gained 3 pounds, but that's what I lost 3 pounds! I got my second gold star, which means I am down 10 pounds! Slow and easy does it like snoop says. Lean and mean machine!

Weight Watchers week two

I lost point 2 (almost half a pound) this week. Why? No exercise... I stayed busy with work, but never got outside. The week before I lost 6 pounds. For week 3 I'm shooting for another 6 pounds. Slow and steady is the plan... It's not too bad of a plan.

The new ace cd came out this week, and I've heard the new KISS cd (which I have pre ordered from wal mart, and I'll probably buy the vinyl if it comes out too...) It is as good as they said. All the tracks are great, and I really like Eric and Tommy's tracks. I think my favorite was Eric's song. I can't wait to hold my copy in my hands. Ace's cd is has some new sounds for ace, but it kicks ass too. Good time to be a KISS fan!

Sometimes I feel that those who have passed on provide healing moments in life. Like they let us know they are still with us. These times for me are usually at Mike Watt gigs for me, as my uncle who has passed was a big fan of, and of course D.BOON's spirit is at every Watt gig. I talked with Larry who had lost a grandmother that day. I lost my grandma Peg last year. It made me think of how short life is, and how great these people, most of whom were my friends really are.
The night was so perfect. The bands were great. Paloma's new band (I did not catch their name...) they were great! Kind of spy/surf sounding. Toys that kill I always miss for some reason, and finally got the chance to see them, and talk to most of them, and even talked to one of their mom's who told me she was a fan of my art! (wow! that made my night!).
Watt, Rawl, and Tom were great as usual, lots of Minutemen, Wire, Roky Erickson and Stooges tunes. The best moment was when watt connected at the end when he slowed things down (as he stated) with one guitar, one drum, one bass...

I felt a lot of love on that boat. I talked to Craig about how I felt about the Rise and Fall (fanzine). You folks should know that guy really does everything he can to get that zine to be the best. That zine gives all of us pedro dudes a voice (thanks, Craig!). Aaron White is another close friend there. We are getting to be like the clayton brothers, it just a matter of time before we start collaborating on the same canvases. It's good to have him in my life. Rawl and Kevin gave me hugs. I kept thinking of the scene form lord of the rings (cartoon version) where gandalf and frodo sail off on that boat at he end into infinity. The water was so calm, and the air was so perfect as the boat circled the harbor, I watched the lights. These are those friends for me. These are the friends of my lifetime who I cry with, share joy, and often celebrate life with. These friend constantly inspire me to be the best I can. I am greatful for them, and last night. One I'll never forget

Taking Action on my Bad Ways...

I rolled into weight watcher's yesterday and signed up for the long haul. Drop 100 lbs. in one year? We'll see. I have gained and lost so many times. This one has to take for good. The fact that the day was 09-09-09 I'm taking that as a good omen. I look forward to riding my bike again (a blood red GT mountian bike, needs new innertubes and a tune up, 22 speeds). If I can do it you can too... special deal for sign up now too... go do it.

Ace Album Leak

Today the new Ace Frehley album Anomaly was leaked HERE. What a great record! Not what I was expecting. I really liked the song Gehngis Kahn which is mostly an instrumental like several of the tracks included, but that's good as it turns out. It's kind of mellow in places too... it put me in a relaxed mood. You can tell he put his heart in this one. I pre ordered mine last week, can't wait to get it.

Modern Day Delilah is the first official track released off the new KISS cd today. It sounds way better now that you can hear it with it's full production value. I was concerned for a moment I was getting over-hyped again by the kiss machine, but I admit, it sounds great. Hurry up October 6th!

Leaks of both albums are out now, mostly of ace's new disc, and today the "sonic boom" art was revealed. Being made by the guy that made the rock and roll over cover (and the logo for the melrose store "Chick-a-boom" which I can bet the artist showed that logo to paul and paul might have said, "What about Sonic Boom?") I have to say this is what I was waiting for, the new KISS cover art... It's not bad, but I'm not blown away by it, and the song revealed today (modern day delialah) sound like carnival of souls KISS, not KISS 1977 or 1976. The rest of the cd may suprise me later, but this is what I thought it would be... not that I'm not glad there is a new cd coming out of KISS music, but both KISS and Ace have hyped their discs as being as good as their 70's heydays. In Ace's case, this is true. As promised everything I've head so far is classic sounding with a bit more guitar punch than his early stuff. I like his website design and cd cover design too.

It pops with color. The light blue on the sonic boom cover needs more saturation, and the faces should have thin lines separating them from the "boom" lines, but it is what it is... I really hope the rest of the KISS cd is better. I'm looknig forward to both cd's. If they both come to town, I might try and see Ace. KISS is going to cost too much (you know this is true) Ace will play smaller clubs and I might be able to afford that. (like most of you out there, we are on a budget)

Like John said to Yoko, "Don't let me down!"and Walmart sucks, I don't like to shop there, but if I want the new KISS cd I guess I have to shop walmart, they have destroyed many small businesses. I'm not suprised KISS signed a deal with this corporate monster...

I had the chance to hang out at Kevin and Rawl's studio

in Pedro. I took some photos for reference, and decided

to make some paintings of them, this is the first of maybe

four, we'll see how it goes. That's Chuck D. in the yellow

and Jacob the guitar player from Killer Dreamer and the Jag Offs and others.I hung out for a bit and talked about underground comics and how tough it used to be to find out about cool new bands from the radio.

We had breakfast at Gaffey st. diner this morning as seen on diners drive ins and dives. I'm no stranger to the chef's cooking as he used to cook at joe's my old high school diner in redondo beach. I normally would get the john wayne which is tortillas, eggs, potatoes, onion, sausage, cheese smothered in a killer spanish sauce, but today I went for the massive country breakfast two homemade biscuits and gravy with sausage patties on top, eggs over easy and home fries- GNARLY! I made it about half way and boxed the rest. Sharon had the chorrizo which they make fresh (I tried it... best I ever ate!) She had coffee and fresh orange juice too. I had coffee and a diet coke (good coffee) so full! I love breakfast on the weekend!

We also found a new pizza place Nick's Brick Oven Pizza off alma in pedro. You have to try the croatian pizza beef prochuto, goat cheese, yellow peppers, onion, tomato, hand made crust REAL good! and Nick is a real nice guy. Try it.

Ace Frehley Shocked Me!

I woke up this morning after Sharon went to get the car serviced and decided to check my email and some usual websites. I checked kiss asylum . com and their was the message that Ace Frehley was going to be at Amoeba at 3:00 today for Record store day. Anyone that knows me knows that Ace is my childhood idol. I got ready at 9:00 and as soon as sharon got back I headed to hollywood. I brought my 1978 lunchbox to have signed and I wore my Kiss necktie my sister gave me for christmas a few years back. I brought my camera, but their was a no pictures allowed thing going and only one item for signing. A lot of people in line were complaining about the rules, but I figured it's free, and was thankful for the moment. When I got my turn ace said, "hey, you brought your lunch!" I pointed to my tie and said, "I got dressed up too" We laughed.

I have always been afraid if I met him I'd be let down somehow, but like the foo fighters song says "there goes my hero, he's ordinary..." What a great day! As far as records went they had all kinds of exclusive vinyl for the day. I bought a smiths single for sharon, and for me an mc5 single, a reissue of the first Bad Religion 45, an out of print Mick Ronson cd, some Turbonegro and Camper Van Beethovan. There was all kinds of swag in the bag when I got home (land of the lost stickers, iron on band and record company logos, even a whoopie cushion!

Someone up there was smiling down on me today!
